QUBE Centre
This former Hotel has been converted into gallery, office and workshop spaces for Oswestry Community Action (OCA), a charity established in 1989 to develop and improve the quality of life for members of the local community who are excluded due to age, disability or rural isolation. We were awarded this project after a competitive interview in which we showed how we would work with user groups to develop the design brief. The consultation process was central to achieving the mix of facilities, environments and experiences required by OCA and local people.
Artists were commissioned and the reception lobby forms a showcase for their work which includes stone etchings, timber furniture and a mosaic which runs from the street entrance and takes visitors on a journey throughout the building. Through this collaborative process we achieved a radical transformation which effectively maximizes light, space and accessibility.
The Lottery award external assessor complemented the design saying:
“Oswestry could eventually have, what is probably the most sophisticated and contemporary buildings for over 100 years ….. The resonance of a modernist aesthetic could become a standard bearer for the Borough Council ” Andrew Wheatley for The Arts Council
