Golden Square drinks
It was a good day when we joined forces with Capita Lovejoy and artist David Patten on the Golden Square competition in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. It was an even better day when we got the news that we’d won it! You may have spotted us enjoyed a celebratory glass of bubbly in the soon-to-be Golden Square (aka The Big Peg Car Park) with Capita Lovejoy and the rest of the team yesterday evening.

Here’s the formal press release in the Birmingham Post.

The winning design proposes that the new square is divided into 3 with a Plaza, an Orchard and a Promenade. These three spaces provide an essential place in the ‘daily round’ for existing and emerging local communities. The Plaza will become a functional events space. The Orchard will reintroduce garden space and will provide an area for relaxation. The Promenade will wrap around The Big Peg to support the cafes and retail units and provide an extension to the plaza for larger events. A canopy will define the entrance into the space, creating a threshold over which visitors cross; a gateway through which they can pass; and a roof under which they can shelter.

The underwriting concept to the design is Golden Thread with gold seams running across the square “connecting to the traditional material sources to relaunch the Jewellery Quarter on the world stage”.
