“Watching the English – The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour” by Kate Fox provides a fascinating insight into typically English quirks and traits that we all take for granted, but have never really thought about. Kate Fox is a Social Anthropologist and co-Director of SIRC (Social Issues Research Centre) in Oxford.
Reading it, I have thought that perhaps you can analyse things too much… It also made me slightly paranoid about certain things that I recognise that I do, when I’ve read and understood how they can be interpreted. However, for those who have to meet new people regularly and evaluate situations quickly, it is a really useful text. It’s also a very enjoyable read as the information and research is presented in a light-hearted and familiar way.

I bought my copy second hand for 50p in The British Heart Foundation charity shop in Worcester. According to the book, shopping in charity shops is something only Lower Class and Upper Class people do, however, only Upper Class people would ever admit to it. Anyone who knows me would know that I’m deliberately bucking the trend, by letting on that I regularly shop in charity shops.
